Computermixx Website Designs

2020.08.08

In August of 2020 I stumbled onto a computer repair & IT services website that looked like the design was many years old and I decided to do a redesign using primarily flexbox CSS rules instead of a pre-built framework like Bootstrap. I put about 23 hours into it in total but never fully finished it and mostly forgot about it as work picked up again.

In March of 2021 work was slowing down again and I remembered that I had worked on this website to help me understand CSS flexbox rules better, started looking at it again and thought it looked pretty good so decided to do a mostly unscripted and unplanned screen recording overview of what I had done with it.

The company I was working for got a contract to build a new website for Computermixx and they asked me to do the design. WordPress, paired with the Elementor Pro page builder plugin, was the company's preferred platform for websites.

I did a google search that pulled up Computermixx's website and got redirected to a different, shady-looking domain after clicking the google result. I reached out to my contact person and they said the website worked fine for them. I spent the next couple of days trying to figure out what exactly was going on - I did not have access to the WordPress admin anymore so my troubleshooting capabilities were quite limited. I was, however, able to determine that WordPress and plugins had not been kept up to date.

With the assistance of ChatGPT I made a PHP script to automate checking a website's source code continuously, hoping I could catch it redirecting, but never did. I expanded on the website pinger's functionality to be able to check multiple websites and show their status codes.

Since it appeared that the Computermixx website likely had been compromised at this point I no longer felt ok with giving anyone a link to their website. I decided to keep an archive of the Computermixx site (as it was when it was launched in 2022) on my own server.

I have checked on the official Computermixx website again and it appears to have been updated by someone, which is mostly a good thing considering that a lack of routine maintenance for WordPress websites is a very good way to get them compromised and hacked, however the site no longer looks the way it was intended. The design has been broken by someone that didn't care as much about it as they did when it was launched. Perhaps WordPress is not the right solution for a client that isn't willing to pay for the maintenance and upkeep it requires or diligently take care of that themselves.

The non-full-width thick black line below headings texts was a design element taken from their business card at the time. The black & green styled brand name in text was used in their old website's styling and was still being used in their logo/branding on the new website.
